A Tribute to We're Calling Shenanigans - Homemade Frosty Paws!

Have you seen the "We're Calling Shenanigans" blog? It's great! You know all those silly things you see on Pinterest and Facebook Postings and you think, that's really cool! I could do that! Then you try it and it's a disaster?

Well these two fun young women from Florida decided to test these theories and they post the results on their blog with their "Shenanometer."

Check it out at the link below!
We're Calling Shenanigans

So in the spirit of the We're Calling Shenanigans team, I decided to try homemade Frosty Paws. What's a Frosty Paw? You don't have dogs do you?

Frosty Paws are a non-dairy frozen treat for dogs. Our dogs love them. LOVE. L.O.V.E. them! They know what they and they know where they are stored!

For the last week or so we haven't been able to find them in either of our local grocery stores. I couldn't find any information on a recall or anything, they just seem to have vanished. Good old Nestle!

While I was Googling trying to find out why I couldn't find one of our dogs' favorite treats, I came across a recipe for homemade Frosty Paws. It looked easy enough. I decided to give it a try.

Here is a link to the recipe:
Homemade Frosty Paws

The ingredients are simple, yogurt, a banana, some peanut butter and some honey.

You mix all of this in a blender or food processor until it's smooth and put it in "paper" cups. This is what our lab, Cabby, does with the paper Frosty Paw cups.

I wanted a better alternative so I used the little reusable Glad plastic containers. We have tons of them in the house and they can be used for more than just the treats, and Cabby won't destroy them!

I measured out 3 ounces into each cup and stuck them in the freezer. The recipe says it makes 13 treats, I only got 11 out of the batch.

It only took a couple of hours for them to freeze, then the taste test!

The directions say to microwave them for a few seconds before serving. Why would I do that? I want them to last as long as possible!

Cabby dug in right away. I was not at all surprised.

Cider, my picky, picky, picky eater, had to think about it first. When he saw his sister dig in he decided to try it. Guess what? He likes it!

He even tried to lick the clean cups to get every last bit!

So like my new love for Danny Klecko dog biscuits, I'll now be making my dogs their own Frosty Paws. Yes better for them but they are so much cheaper! The "real" Frosty Paws come in a 4-pack for $4.49 each! Sometimes I can find them cheaper but not always. That's $1.12/treat and they get 2 per week.

The ingredients for the homemade Frosty Paws cost me $3.77. If you add in the cost of the plastic cups (if you have to invest in them, I didn't) the total cost goes to $9.78. But remember there are 11 treats, not just 4 and the cups can be used over and over again. So per Frosty Paw, just the food ingredients come to $0.34 each. If you add in the cups it's $0.89 each for your initial investment. I say it's worth it! I may even experiment with other flavors of yogurt and see what they like.

So on my "Shenanometer" this is a "Shenanigans Revoked" reading! This really worked!
